Layla Livaland stood beside her bay quarter horse mount. Lacey had her head towards the ring where the barrels were set up while Layla adjusted her saddle. She would be competing novice and normally she would be riding Monte her pony but she had lent him out to a friend to use because she didn't have one. Lacey was luckily trained in barrels and it gave Layla a hope that they might win, but her nervous butterflies sprouted at just the thought of messing up infront of the crowd that had probally been riding western ever since they were young. She was used to eventing and hunter/jumper so barrel racing was not her best, but every year she would go compete in a class for fun and one or two years she actually won.
The announcer called her and Lacey's name and she gave a worried look towards Annie before walking towards the shute where she mounted up. Lacey was already Layla had never felt the mare so driven and she waited until the buzzer sounded and they were out. Lacey was flying towards the first barrel and almost left Layla behind in the dust. They came to the first barrel on the right and rounded it a couple inches away from the green and white barrel set up. She sighed as her foot just missed the top of the barrel and didn't tip over. Layla urged Lacey faster as they came to the second barrel but she needed no encouragement. Lacey was all out now and skidded around the second barrel just hitting it with her shoulder but she quickly bounded out of the way. Layla bit her lip as she looked around quick and saw it bottling in place.
The crowd was on edge since they were silenced now and Layla urged Lacey towards the last barrel, coming to it she took the turn around the barrel a little wider than expected and they lost a fraction of time which wouldn't be great if they tipped the barrel. As they came down the middle at full gallop they passed the line and the buzzard sounded. Layla brought the mare back down and didn't look up at the board. "We did our best thats all that counts." She said as she patted the bays neck.
